Jimmy Foxx is largely unknown by the wider world, even by baseball fans. Odd considering he basically had the same career as Lou Gehrig and is arguably the 2nd or 3rd best player of his generation - trailing Ruth, maybe Gehrig, and Mell Ott is in the conversation too. His place in career home runs stood at 2nd for 30 years (Mell Ott at 3rd) with 534 home runs.
This is a 1936 Goudey Gum card. The catalog designation is R314 type 3. Goudey cranked out a variety of gum premiums in the mid-30s, and the R314s came in different types. Type 3 is fairly scarce and is distinct from the others primarily because of its lack of a white border. I got this card in a lot I bought from ebay that had some R313s I needed. A Jimmy Foxx was a nice bonus. And there were a few more type 3 stars included as well (I'll get to them in another post). One of my best ebay purchases.
