Cards in the 30s had a lot of variety. There were colorful smaller cards, especially in the early 30s. There were odd cards like the big-heads. There were large cards like the Butterfinger premiums (more like small posters). And then there were a bunch of postcard-ish photo cards. Goudey was the big card maker of the day. They made several sets of these plain photo cards, each with a slight variation to their finish. But National Chicle also made a set. These examples are from the National Chicle set. They are hardly cards in that they are on paper rather than card stock. The top card features HOFer Hank Greenberg of the Tigers at bat with the Yankees HOFer Bill Dickey manning the plate. Below, Cardinals manager (and HOFer), Leo Durocher talks it over with an umpire. This set is not particularly popular. Larger cards, especially paper thin ones, are less popular with collectors. And the black and white photos with nothing on the backs also make them less interesting to collectors. But that means that they are relatively inexpensive. There isn't a ton of 85-year-old HOF cards you can get for $5. These are some of the few.
