1948 Speedway Premium - George Kell

This is one of George Kell's earliest cards. It is more of a photo than a card (measuring in at 8" x 10"). It is a premium, nonetheless. A premium is an item given away as a reward for some other patronage. In this case, Speedway 79 gas stations gave out these photo premiums featuring the Tigers' player of the week (the Auravision records and the Kellogg's card are other examples of premiums). One of those weeks in '48, George Kell won the award, and the Speedway customers got the reward. The set is only 15 or 16 photos. I'm on the lookout for an affordable Hal Newhouser Speedway to go with this one.
